Our Story

Our 50 Year Journey

Nannette and Mike met at Colorado State University in September 1971. Nannette had just arrived for her freshman year from Richmond, Virgina. Mike was a Junior from Highland Park, Illinois. While they quickly became a couple, they ended up with a commuting relationship for two years after Mike graduated in 1973. Mike went on to retrace the return route of Lewis and Clark from Oregon to St. Louis by canoe and backpack in 1973 and earned his MBA from Northwestern in 1975. Nannette stayed at CSU and graduated in June 1975.

After the wedding and honeymoon, the Wien’s moved to Dallas and Mike started working for Frito-Lay. Nannette was hired as a high school Home Economics teacher. They had their first son Brian in 1980 and moved to Connecticut in 1982 to join the marketing team at Pepsi (the parent company of Frito Lay).

Mike left Pepsi in 1985 to become the senior marketing officer at Omni Hotels Worldwide and moved to Andover Massachusetts. Nannette gave birth to Andrew in 1986. CitiBank brought the Wiens back to Highland Park in 1987 for a senior marketing position. Nannette worked for Lake Forest Food and Wine to develop their corporate gift basket business. Their third son Jason was born in 1990.

Deloitte hired Mike in 1996 as a managing director responsible for industry focused marketing and sales. Nannette became the office manager and corporate “mom” for Breadwinners Café, a popular gourmet soup, sandwich, and salad Café.

Mike left Deloitte in 2004 to start the Specific Edge Institute, a consulting and professional speaking firm. Brian passed away peacefully in 2017 after living with the family for his first 9 years and at Little Angels for 28 years as a person with special needs. While he never developed mentally past the age of a one-year-old, he always thought he was normal and enjoyed life.

Jason married Elyse in 2017, and they live with Nannette and Mike's two grandchildren, Lilah (2) and Jonah (7 months) in Topanga, California. Andrew married Ellory in 2018, and they live with Nannette and Mike's two grandchildren, Rudy (4) and Auden (2) in Boulder.

The Wien’s happily retired in Colorado in 2018 to enjoy hiking, bike riding, skiing and enjoying the mountains. And they do occasionally travel the world so Mike can compete in triathlon World Championships and Nannette can be Mike’s Chief Competitive Intelligence Officer. In the process, they can both explore new countries and cultures.
